NPR Wins $700,000.00 Nursing Home Verdict
March 21, 2004
On March 16, 2004, an Oklahoma County, Oklahoma jury awarded the Estate of Betty Sellers $700,000.00 in a nursing home neglect case against Peak Medical Oklahoma No. 3, Inc. Nix, Patterson & Roach Attorney Brady Paddock represented Holly Bridwell, the Personal Representative of the Estate of Betty Sellers, in the case. The Defendants owned The Lakes Health Care Center located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where Ms. Sellers resided from November 1, 2000 through October 9, 2001. During her residency at The Lakes, Ms. Sellers became malnourished, developed a Stage IV pressure sore on her left heel, and also developed a Stage III pressure sore on her coccyx. Ms. Sellers died on November 17, 2001 from sepsis resulting from the pressure sores. NPR put on evidence during the trial that the corporate defendant made conscious, budget-driven decisions to under staff the nursing home in order to maximize financial gain. A 12-person jury rendered a unanimous verdict finding that Peak Medical Oklahoma No. 3, Inc. was responsible for Ms. Sellers' injuries and death and assessed compensatory damages at $700,000.00.
